THEORETICAL APPROACH

My approach incorporates primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as well as Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), although I incorporate elements from other theories.  The client takes an active role in treatment.  I tend to utilize a short-term approach, and treatment may be completed in as few as 6-10 sessions, although certainly longer when appropriate.

I utilize a number of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques to assist clients in uncovering and examining their thoughts and changing their behaviors.  These include identifying automatic thoughts and cognitive distortions, utilizing better cognitive management, modeling, assertiveness training, and social skills training.  Relaxation methods such as breathing, progressive muscle relaxation and guided imagery are also used.

Utilizing the Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) approach, I incorporate identification of outcomes and the changing of sub modalities:  these assist clients in identifying target responses (behaviors, thoughts, and feelings) and clarifying how they experience what they experience.  Structured exercises assist clients in further accessing and associating into those target response patterns.  Elements of Ericksonian hypnotherapy  may also be utilized.
